Vaal River’s Importance to Agriculture and Industry
In order to meet the industrial needs of a large part of the Free State Province, as well as the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area, water is drawn from the Vaal River. It is also a major source of water for irrigation as part of the Vaal-Hartz Scheme. It is interesting to note that approximately 12 million consumers in Gauteng and surrounding areas are supported by water drawn from the Vaal River.
