Scrapbooking for Beginners

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

If you are like me when I started scrapbooking, I was completely overwhelmed by the volume of materials available for scrapbookers. There are literally scores of stores that only sell scrapbooking materials. I would have never imagined a store just for scrapbookers. What a concept. Scrapbooks have come a long way from our first attempts. They were generally childish and tacky. I know mine was. My worst mistake was in using Elmer’s glue to attach my Yankee baseball cards to my book. Yes, I ruined a mint Mickey Mantle card with Elmer’s glue. Mia Culpa.

Take Care of the Elderly

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

It is time for the ‘me’ generation to serve those who have made it possible for us to lead healthy and happy lives. Baby boomers are now starting to turn 60. The first group turned 60 last year. In a few years we Baby Boomers will be the senior citizens. We need to set the example now and take care of the elderly and their problems.

We as human beings can help elderly people by the way and attitude we treat and serve them. Elderly people are naturally slow and can be a little addled. If we are behind an elderly person in line at the grocery store and have to wait a few extra minutes because the old lady is fumbling with her money, we can show our compassion by smiling and acting as though we don’t have a care in the world. The older lady may even apologize for slowness. We can help by saying ‘no problem, I don’t have anything but time or I’m not in any hurry. Remember; that old lady will be us one day.

What to do after a Cancer Diagnosis

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Each time you go to the doctor, you will want to take someone with you for support and help. When you are upset, the memory becomes muddled. You forget things and might miss something vital. Besides having someone with you makes you feel less alone.

Do research but try not to obsess. Don’t spend hours on message boards where you hear horror stories about people’s struggles with cancer. This doesn’t help. Try to keep a positive attitude; this will help you in your recovery or during the course of the illness. Don’t feel like you have to be a Pollyanna; let out your feelings. Grieve. You might even want to consult a therapist to help you emotionally.

No two people react the same way to having cancer. Everyone reacts differently so don’t worry about doing it right. There is no right way to deal with having cancer. Follow your instincts and be true to yourself. You are in the fight of your life. Be strong.
